Jinwei Zhang

A Chinese-born pianist, educator, and arts administrator based in the United States. He recently completed his Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) in Piano Performance at The Catholic University of America, where he studied under Dr. Ivo Kaltchev and served as a graduate assistant in piano accompanying. During his doctoral studies, he was awarded the John Paul Music Scholarship, William Masselos Scholarship, and the Marie F. Connor Scholarship. He previously earned his Master of Music degree from the Mannes School of Music in New York as a Presidential Scholar and holds a Bachelor’s degree in Piano Performance from the Sichuan Conservatory of Music.

 

As a performer, Zhang has appeared at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall, as well as at major venues in Washington, D.C., including Ward Recital Hall, McNeir Hall, and diplomatic venues such as the Embassy of the People`s Republic of China and the Embassy of Bulgaria. He has been invited to perform at international music festivals including the Brevard Music Center and the Atlantic Music Festival, where he received scholarship support. His performances and artistic work have been featured in international media outlets including China Daily, The Washington Diplomat, and New York Weekly. His playing is noted for its clarity of tone, structural awareness, and expressive control, reflecting a balance between technical precision and musical sensitivity.

His work as a performer has also been recognized through a number of international competitions. He was awarded First Prize in the Elite International Music Competition, which led to an invited performance at Carnegie Hall, and received the Gold Prize in the International Piano Competition Ad Libitum (Beethoven Category). He has also received top prizes in competitions including the Fifteenth Brahms Cup strait Music Competition and the Haydn Piano Award International Youth Piano Open Competition.

Alongside his performance career, Zhang is the Co-Founder and Artistic Director of the Washington International Young Artists Music Series (WIYAMS), an initiative under the International Art Development and Promotion Association (IADPA). Through this work, he has developed a platform supporting emerging musicians through curated performances and international collaboration. The series has grown into a recognized cultural presence in Washington, D.C., bringing together young artists from leading institutions and diverse cultural backgrounds. Through WIYAMS, Zhang has contributed to shaping a platform that not only presents performances but also facilitates dialogue between artists, institutions, and audiences.

 

In addition to his work as a performer and artistic director, Zhang is an active educator with extensive teaching experience in both China and the United States. His teaching emphasizes tone production, technical development, and musical understanding, while encouraging students to develop independence and their own artistic voice. His students have achieved prize-winning results in competitions and have gone on to pursue advanced studies in music. He has also been recognized with multiple teaching awards for his work with young musicians.

 

Zhang was selected for the 2023 China Arts Talent Development Special Project, recognizing his continued development as both a pianist and educator.
